Dark Sky rules for businesses
Malibu's Dark Sky Ordinance requires commercial outdoor lighting to be off by 11 PM or at close of business. Fixtures must be fully shielded and aimed down, with a color temperature of 3000K or lower. Seasonal lighting may go past 3000K from November 15 to January 15. A permanent system on a timer can follow those hours without anyone having to remember to switch it off.
Shopping centers and landlords
Much of Malibu's retail is in managed centers: Malibu Country Mart, Malibu Lumber Yard, Cross Creek, Malibu Village, Point Dume Village and Trancas Country Market. Each owner sets its own exterior rules. Get the landlord's requirements first, and we'll put the layout, the activation date and the shut-off schedule in writing for them.
