Visalia
Visalia, the Tulare County seat, was founded in 1852. Downtown, the Fox Theatre opened in 1930 as an atmospheric movie palace and was restored in 1999. Mooney Grove Park holds the Tulare County Museum, and Highway 198 heads east from town to Sequoia National Park.
The historic district
Visalia's Historic Preservation Advisory Committee reviews new construction and exterior changes in the city's Historic District, and to properties on the Local Register, before a building permit is issued. The district runs roughly from Houston Avenue to Tulare Avenue and from Giddings Street to Santa Fe Street. If your home is inside it, ask the city early whether your lighting plan needs review.
