Permanent and holiday lighting in Malibu, CA

Permanent, holiday and accent lighting in Malibu, planned around the city's Dark Sky Ordinance, salt air and long coastal rooflines. Free quote.

Malibu's coast

The City of Malibu, incorporated in 1991, has about 21 miles of coastline. Its Local Coastal Program was certified in 2002, and the city issues its own coastal development permits. Homes range from beachfront houses on Pacific Coast Highway to hillside and canyon properties above it. Most are exposed to salt air and the marine layer.

The Dark Sky Ordinance

Malibu adopted its Dark Sky Ordinance in 2018 (Malibu Municipal Code Chapter 17.41). It applies to existing outdoor lighting as well as new lighting, and the compliance deadline for homes and businesses was October 15, 2022. Every lighting plan in Malibu starts with it. The details are on the roofline, holiday, commercial and accent pages for Malibu below.

Fire recovery

The 2018 Woolsey Fire burned much of western Malibu. The January 2025 Palisades Fire burned along the city's eastern edge, including Big Rock and Carbon Beach. Many Malibu homes are being rebuilt. If yours is one of them, the roofline page explains how lighting fits into a rebuild.
