Santa Monica's houses
Santa Monica's streets mix Craftsman bungalows, Spanish Colonial Revival homes and courtyard apartments, and modern infill. The late Frank Gehry's own house, the Gehry Residence on 22nd Street, is here too. The Municipal Pier opened in 1909 as the West Coast's first concrete pier.
Landmarks and historic districts
Santa Monica's Landmarks Commission oversees designated landmarks and historic districts. Districts include the Third Street Neighborhood Historic District, a Bay Street Craftsman district, the San Vicente Boulevard Courtyard Apartments, the 11th Street Bungalow district and the Fourth Street Corner district. Under the city code (Chapter 9.56), an alteration permit there needs a Certificate of Appropriateness, and the Commission has issued certificates that cover exterior lighting.
