Canals and walk streets
Abbot Kinney built the Venice canals in 1905 for his Venice of America. The surviving canals were listed on the National Register as the Venice Canal Historic District in 1982. Venice's walk streets are pedestrian-only lanes lined with homes, and the Venice Coastal Zone Specific Plan protects them with limits such as a 42-inch cap on front walls and fences.
Coastal zone planning
Venice is a City of Los Angeles neighborhood inside the coastal zone, and the Venice Coastal Zone Specific Plan sets rules for building there. If your lighting is part of a larger exterior project, include it in the plans your designer submits.
